Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State has urged the Director General of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria SMEDAN, Dr. Dikko Umaru Radda to reposition the agency so as to impact positively on the MSME sub sector of the economy. The governor gave the charge while on a working visit to the Agency’s Corporate Headquarters on Tuesday in Abuja. The Katsina State Governor who could not hide his admiration for the core mandate of the Agency urged the Agency to focus more on its core mandate which is promoting and developing MSMEs in Nigeria.
He tasked the Agency to seek more effective collaboration with other Agencies of government that shares similar mandates in the pursuit of it objective, vision and programmes. He however called on the Agency to package their empowerment programmes and activities in line with the availability of funds allocated to it. Masari was however particular on the empowerment of women in Nigeria, and therefore asked the Agency to do more in the area of women empowerment. “We need to empower women, looking at the 220bn cbn/msme fund which allocated 60% to women, it is very good, it means women can handle money more than men; empowering women is empowering the society and the issue of empowering women should be our major concerns”
Governor Masari further advocated that women empowerment must be taken seriously adding that most women are micro entrepreneurs, sometimes they do not require cooperatives, though certain businesses require it. The Governor congratulated Dr. Radda on his new national assignment and reiterated his support to the actualization of the mandate of the Agency. He urged the Director General to leverage on his political goodwill to reposition the Agency. Earlier the Director General of SMEDAN Dr. Dikko Umaru Radda briefed the Governor on the mandate, vision and mission of the Agency adding that the new management under his leadership will do everything possible to focus on its core mandate.
“From the little briefings I have received so far it’s like there are few challenges, the major mandate of the agency has not been actualized; but after these briefing, I will gather experts on SMEs to guide us on the way forward”, the DG assured.
